I have a twelve-year-old Chihuahua named Cash. The day I got him, he slid off the hardwood floors and fell about three feet into a puppy gate that was blocking the stairs. His front right paw got caught in one of the holes and he was stuck, hanging backwards. It turned out to be a pretty bad break, and he was in a cast for almost three months. During these first three formative months, he was carried everywhere, hand-fed, and totally coddled. Needless to say, he had some adjustment issues when the cast came off and it was time for him to be a normal dog again.
He has always been a little off behaviorally. He loses his mind – excessive barking, growling, baring teeth – almost any time someone enters/leaves the house or a room. He pees all over things to mark his territory (mainly on furniture – he even peed in the bed). He generally doesn’t like strangers or large men. No matter how sweet or how angry you are with him when you tell him to stop, he just keeps going. There’s no stopping him until he’s finished. In twelve years, he has never once listened.
I am now in a situation where I must move, and I cannot have dogs in the new place. The problem is, everyone in my family is aware of Cash’s issues and nobody will agree to take him. It seems like my only two options are taking him to a shelter (where he will most likely be put down) or putting him down myself. I’m just so torn. I don’t know what to do.
Any advice or input would be very welcome.
