Jamie Vardy stepped off the bench to take Leicester’s penalty against Tottenham – but his first touch did not go as planned.

Jamie Vardy missed a penalty with his first touch after coming on as a substitute in Leicester’s 3-1 defeat to Tottenham.

The Leicester striker was dropped to the bench by Claude Puel in the loss to Spurs, but he had a lively contribution when he was brought on after 60 minutes at Wembley.

After replacing Demarai Gray with his side trailing to Davinson Sanchez’s headed opener, James Maddison was brought down inside the box by Jan Vertonghen with Vardy already warming up and ready to come on.

Maddison took hold of the ball and presented it to the former England striker after he replaced Gray, but with his first touch, Hugo Lloris dived to save his penalty.

It was not the first time a player has taken a spot-kick in the Premier League immediately after coming on with Wigan midfielder Ben Watson doing so on New Year’s Eve in November 2011, sealing a 2-2 draw.

Vardy had scored his previous seven penalties and would later reduce the arrears, but Spurs would seal the win through Heung-Min Son in stoppage time.
